Tonight’s the Night!

Saturday night, August 7th, Coventry MCM Stadium. This is the night that drivers who have qualified for the 2010 BriSCA F1 World Championship will be concentrating on more than just heats and final – it will be the Brandon shaleway that will be getting their undivided attention.

Car set-up, stagger, tyres, camber, wet or dry, this is the last chance before the World Championship Final for twenty UK drivers to make informed choices they hope will help them to carry aloft the magnificent solid silver world trophy donated to BriSCA by Coventry promoter Charles Ochiltree back in 1960 at the first World Final held at the Stadium.

Following this season’s tried and tested format the F1 races kick off with a whites and yellows only heat – 30 drivers have booked in for this one, followed by two more traditional heats for all grades, a consolation race, then comes the Don Round Memorial Trophy Final sponsored by the Veterans’ Association, all rounded off with the grand national race.

Adding to the mix of 63 F1 cars, 69 BriSCA F2’s racing over two heats, consolation, final and grand national produces a recipe for a feast of the best oval racing BriSCA has to offer.

After the world semi-finals held at Sheffield and Buxton, World Champion Andrew Smith and former champ Frankie Wainman are now equal on a level playing field at Coventry.  Andrew has had the edge over Frankie this year, but Frankie is the highest point scorer at Coventry this season with 113 points to Andrew’s 83!

Success comes with confidence, and confidence comes with success! To quote Rebecca Smith, the little sweeheart in Gears and Tears: Drivers “Are you feeling confident?”. BriSCA F1 World Finalists – tonight is the night you must put your confidence to the test – it’s your last chance.

And for the fans – come along full of promise to support your favourite driver – spur them on with your cheers, give them a confidence boost, raise the roof off the stadium – it’s your time to practice for the World Final too.

Saturday 7th August, Coventry MCM Stadium, Rugby Road, Brandon, Coventry.
Start Time 7.00pm (turnstiles open 5.00pm). Free Car Park.

Admission: Adults £16.00, Concessions £12.00, Children 11 -15 £5.00 under 11’s Free

Saturday! Saturday! Saturday Night’s All Right!

Well it will be if you are at MCM Coventry Stadium on Saturday 31st July for the Coventry Masters Unlimited Banger Racing.

The Brandon oval lends itself ideally to these big engined, big bodied monster bangers that rise and fall, nudge and spin in such perfect time that the races could be set to Elton John’s music.

For an upbeat night out where shouting and cheering, waving and booing is positively encouraged there’s no better way to get rid of all the pent up emotions of the past few months.

Come and forget the credit crunch, come and see the monsters crunch.

Specially prepared cars that if you’re lucky you might still see on the highways, transformed into multi-coloured racers that have escaped the scrappage scheme.

Already there are well over thirty cars booked in to appear with still a week left to book and we are delighted to feature some huge names from the banger scene already preparing their cars for battle.

There’s fearless Tim Aldridge former F1 Stock Car driver; 474 Matty Threkeld a top class driver from the North, World Cup Winner 67 Mark "Sparky" Whittaker who claimed his title at Cowdenbeath earlier this year after many years of trying.

This Masters extravaganza appeals to racers over the water and we already have a Dutch entrant, Gert Hoekman, determined to steal the major trophy away from the British drivers.

Unlimited Bangers is about team racing as much as it is individuals and we are delighted to see star representatives from Stinkbridge, Team Black and Barton Boys on the list.

This super oval meeting at Coventry is definitely a programme of two halves. Big, bold as brass bangers, coupled with the more sophisticated Rebel Racing.

A smaller contact formula Rebels are purpose built, run on 850cc reliant engines and are not averse to using the front end to get rid of the opposition – thirty plus of these on track at once makes for a humdinger of a race – and on this occasion they will be fighting it out for World Qualifying points and the chance to get to grips with the Coventry shale before their World Wide Rebellion at Brandon on the 2nd October.

Come to Coventry on Saturday 31 July, 7.00pm start – lose all that tension – you won’t regret it.

The four wheel Coventrystox action continues this Saturday as we welcome back the very popular V8 HotStox brigade on the Brandon turf and after their May event we can’t wait to see them back out in action.

Last month we saw some fantastic drives from the lower graders, especially Mike Lomax who resides from Stockport. He was quick to adjust to the shale from the moment the green was waved and racked up the opening race win along with the Grand National event of the night and claimed two runner up spots in between, so can his form continue through to this Saturday night? Carl Radforth took the second heat win of the night but it was Loughborough racer Chris Bracher who showed his dominance come final time and he wowed the crowd with his track craft and thoroughly deserved the top spot on the podium. With well over twenty cars booked into appear already we are looking forward to an action packed night from the V8’s.

We welcome the Brisca FI Heritage for the first time this year and they are working hard in preparation for their World Final exhibition and racing slot this September. Keith Barber and his dedicated team are going to extremes to pull together many cars for the pinnacle event of the year at Brandon and we are looking forward to seeing these racers do battle this weekend to see who will be a hot tip for their main event in a couple of months time. These fantastic machines always prove popular with new and old fans and are always worth a look.

Completing the bill this weekend are Coventry’s own Street Banger formula and coming off the back of their Team Championship meeting they will be looking forward to returning and Team Tyrefit will be wearing their Team Champion crowns with pride and hope to continue their winning streak, however this week it’s everyone for themselves!

This meeting will lead us very nicely into one of Coventry’s top events of the season, the Coventry Masters for Unlimited Bangers, which is set to take place on the 31st July and bookings are already being taken for this huge event, so another to mark on the calendar. Anyway back to this weekend the whole meeting is looking to be top quality so don’t be late – first race kicks off at 7.00p.m. sharp! Turnstiles open at 5p.m.

Admission – Adults £12, Children 12-15 £5, 11 and under FREE.

Sunday 4th July 2010 – Start Time 12.00p.m.

Street Banger Team Championship, National Ministox, UK Modifieds

This Sunday sees Coventry Stadium host the first ever Street Banger Team Champions meeting and what an event it is looking to be. Nearly twenty teams are booked to appear all in the hope of becoming the 2010 Team Champions on the Brandon turf.

Amongst the hopefuls we are welcoming long distance travellers Team Red n Black which consist of Autospeed regulars coming up from Cornwall and Somerset so they will be hoping to make their journey worthwhile. From a travelling team to those on the doorstep we have two Cov Squads booked to appear and they hardly miss a meeting at Brandon so they will be hoping their experience and track knowledge pays dividends. Crash Co have gone all out and booked three teams to appear with the leading Incarace driver 601 Lee Usha wanting to break his duck on the Brandon oval for 2010. He is fresh from being Jeremy Clarkson’s stunt double on a recent top gear … apparently!

Lady racer and trophy girl Jemma Kerr is hoping to take the 888 machine to the top and claim an award for herself this afternoon. However she is up against some tough competition as the Standlake Slags are booked to appear one of which is Stu Timms who is a former Street Banger Gold Cup winner and we’re sure he would like to add Team Champion to his role of honour. The Tyrefit crew are also strong favourites as they feature Leyland Marston the reigning points champion here along with Joe Frankland who has claimed the chequered here, Anthony Booth as well as Ryan Davies who is a shining light of the Midlands Banger scene. With so many teams this event is looking to be a cracker and whichever team manages to claim enough points to take the title will have thoroughly deserved their crown.

Joining the Street Bangers for their epic event are the National Ministox and as usual these mighty minis are out in force on Sunday. Well over thirty Junior racers are booked to appear and if you have seen this particular BriSCA formula before you will be amazed how they aren’t afraid of mixing it up and using the front bumper to full effect. Last time out Bob Griffen was a man on a mission in the Feature Final so keep your eyes peeled for the #1 machine as he will be determined to climb aboard the podium once again.

Finally the awesome UK Modifieds complete the bill and although they are slightly lower on numbers than the other formulas this is only temporary as this category is quickly catching the eye of many racers and double figures will soon be a regular occurrence. Weighing only 500 kilos but with 200bhp under the bonnet these things fly and with some big names behind the wheel prepare to be impressed.

So all in all – one not to be missed – 12.00p.m. start time and the pit gates will open from 9.30a.m. see you there!

ANGLO-DUTCH GOLDEN HELMET MEETING – RESTORE THE FAITH!

It is business as usual at Coventry MCM Stadium since England were unceremoniously dumped out of the Football World Cup competition in South Africa.

For BriSCA F1 Stock Car fans all is not lost – The Anglo-Dutch Golden Helmet contest comes to Brandon on Saturday 3 July, start time 7:00pm.

Both UK and Dutch drivers have raced season long to qualify for this one off feature race and information received from Holland’s Emmen Promoter Minne Meyer really whets the appetite for an explosive start to the F1 proceedings.

Dutch H17 Bowe Arjen Hiddinga is described as driving like Bobby Burns, which for UK fans will be a treat of pedal to the metal and if he is half as good as the ex F1 superstar, the the enormous trophy, currently held by Stuart Smith Jnr could be winging it’s way back to Holland with the race winner’s share of the £2000 prize fund.

Talking of Stuart Smith, suprisingly he has not qualified for this year’s race. As defending Golden Helmet trophy holder he will be seeded onto the grid. Stuart’s luck needs to change – will this be his night? It would certainly be a popular result if the National Points Champion could pull it off.

Once the Golden Helmet race is run it is back to the increasingly popular Whites and Yellows race, followed by two more heats, consolation, final and grand national.

Thirty-five C (white) and B (yellow) grade drivers have booked in for their heat which includes one Dutch driver H62 Camiel De Dekker.

Every heat has an inter-continental flavour with Dutch drivers across the grades competing in the remainder of the Golden Helmet meeting.

Full race grids for seven BriSCA F1 stock car races supported by the Rebel Racers the July Golden Helmet meeting at Coventry’s mobilecashmate.com Stadium if nothing else will be a lively affair. Come on England! Scotland, Ireland, Wales and Holland, in fact all nationalities welcome. Restore the faith!

Start time for F1’s 7:00pm. Admission: Adults £17.00. Concessions £12.00. Children 11- 15 £5 Under 11’s FREE

Oval Racing continues at Coventry on Sunday 4 July with Street Bangers 4-a-Side Team Racing, National Mini Stox for drivers 10 -16 years and the fast and furious UK Modifieds. Start Time 12.00 noon

Next month will see the return of the Pepsi Golden Helmet our Dutch International we stage with our partners at Emmen Raceway in Holland. This will be the third time this race has been held and Stuart Smith Jnr will be defending his win last year from the Dutch raiders.

We are expecting around 80 F1’s to be in attendance at the meeting including 8 Dutch cars who have qualified from the track championship held at Emmen whilst the UK drivers will be the highest point scorers from the 2010 Coventry fixtures. The Pepsi Golden Helmet race will be the first of the evening and will carry a £2,000 prize fund plus that huge gold trophy until the Dutch Golden Helmet in Emmen on the 18th September 2010 when no doubt the Dutch will endeavour to keep it.

After the Pepsi Golden Helmet race we will be keeping to the new Coventry format of a Whites & Yellows followed by two heats to give the lower graders a better chance at qualification into the final and to add a little more spice we will allow all the Dutch drivers to enter regardless as to grade.

We will have the Rebels racing as support which will ensure a quick turnaround on what will be a busy night with seven Brisca F1 races, four from the rebels and even some stockarts before 7pm as some pre big race entertainment.

We have had to increase the prices by £1 to help cover the large expenditure of getting the Dutch drivers across the water and the higher prize fund however it will be the largest turnout of cars year to date and no doubt will be used by the Dutch to dial in the cars for the WF.

We would like to thank Pepsi for sponsoring this International meeting and we are sure they will add an extra dimension to the nights racing. We are taking bookings for the restaurant on 02476-542395 which will be serving a two course carvery for £15 or for those that want some privacy we do have executive boxes available from £750 for 24 guests including entry, buffet and programme.

We will have a late bar in the understand for those that wish to party, camping is available free of charge for those that wish to stay over and we have Sunday racing for those that enjoy the other forms of short oval racing.

Come early and stay late as it is going to be a busy night of top class racing.

Interest in the new meeting format at Coventry Stadium giving White (C) and Yellow (B) grade F1 Stock Car drivers their own point scoring and prize winning heat is proving to be very popular with the lower grade drivers.

Twenty-seven cars are programmed to race and late applications received from a further two white top drivers who will be given bookings but will not appear in the programme. No doubt after a weekend of hard racing at Kings Lynn and Belle Vue, there may be one or two cancellations but full grid of keen competitors looks very likely.

Amongst the ‘Yellows’ are Rob Cowley, Robert Broome, Neil Shenton, Geoff Nickolls, Dave Willis (all being well after his incident at Lynn) and Chris Bonner. A class act by anybody’s standard and should make heat two a real feature of the meeting.

Of course these drivers have a hard act to follow 24 Stars and Super Stars Racing for the Trust Fund Trophy in a special race which kicks of the meeting.

Another fifteen super Blue Roof drivers will be adding their own special brand of racing with the stars – although one could argue that Mick Harris, Steven Cayzer, Simon Panton, Joe Booth, Dan Squire and Chris Cowley are stars in their own right anyway.

We then have the traditional three heats, consolation, final and grand national in a meeting sponsored by mobilecashmate.com and Millers Oils are putting up an additonal £500 for grade award winners.

It really promises to be an exciting night of racing for the BriSCA F1’s with so much on offer right across the grades.

BriSCA F2’s have rallied around us again. 71 of the super quick shale racers including Messrs Brennan, Polley, Bradbury, Cooper, Palmer plus eleven more star grade drivers of the calibre of Coventry favourites Bert Finnikin and Mark Simpson make this a F2 meeting to equal or perhaps even rival the excitement of their bigger F1 brothers.

Whatever happens we know both formulae will do their utmost to put on an entertaining night’s racing for the fans.

Hope to see you on Saturday 5 June start time 7:00pm. Think you may be sorry if you miss this one.

Charity Begins at Home

Stock Car Racers Trust Fund Benefit

It’s an old adage but true ‘Charity Begins at Home’ and Charity for the BriSCA F1 Stock Car community begins on Saturday 5 June when the annual British Stock Car Drivers’ (BSCDA) Trust Fund Race takes place at the stadium it has made its home – the Rugby Road shaleway, Coventry International Motor Speedway – aka The Brandon Bowl.

The BSCDA Trust Fund looks after drivers who have sustained racing injuries and relies heavily on voluntary contributions which come literally by the bucket, or perhaps more accurately helmet, load from generous stock car racing fans.

As is the norm, on Saturday 5 June the pick of the crop of F1 racers will compete in a special race for the Trust Fund Trophy and fans will show their appreciation by giving their pennies and pounds to the popular drivers who leave their cars in the pits while they go out amongst the crowd collecting for this worthy cause.

Rothwell based driver Murray Harrison is defending the trophy race and may have to look to his laurels; the Trust Fund Race is for the elite of the sport – the Stars and Superstar drivers who have earned their place on the grid at Coventry being top point scorers in the National Points Table.

As we go to press 21 drivers grid for the BSCDA Trust Fund Race, including established stars such as World Champion Andrew Smith, National Points Champion Stuart Smith, Frankie Wainman Junior and John Lund. Eligible to race are newly appointed stars and superstars Richard Wilson, Iain Holden, Luke Davidson, Lee Dimmick and Lee Fairhurst. Will they hold their own fighting off challenges from the likes of Paul Harrison and Mark Gilbank? The only way to find out is to be there on the night.

This season, probably more than any other in recent times, the Trust Fund needs stock car racing supporters to be generous in their giving – the Fund is suffering, as we all are, by the economic downturn and the reduction in interest paid on investment accounts. A penny more each from 1000 people makes another £100.00. Donations to the Fund can also be made to The Secretary, The BSCDA. PO Box 662, Halifax HX3 OW2

This same meeting is also a World of Shale qualifying round for BriSCA F2 drivers who have supported Coventry Stadium in good numbers since the start of the season. To witness these smaller relations of the oval racing family coming out of the bends three abreast lap after lap is a spectacle not to be missed on this all too rare occasion when they appear with the F1’s at Coventry.

Meeting start time 7:00pm. Admission Adults £16:00, Concessions £12:00 –

Children 11 years and under FREE – 12 – 15 years £5.00

On Saturday 5 June at Coventry Stadium a lot will be happening on track and behind the scenes.

The BriSCA F1 Trust Fund Race is an addition to the programme. The meeting format will follow the same modus operandi as the May meeting – A Whites and Yellows only heat, two further heats, consolation, final and grand national.

The Trust Fund race is an extra bonus heat and already 21 drivers have booked in to support this necessary fund raising activity for the BSCDA. Once again drivers will circulate amongst the crowd collecting from the very generous Coventry spectators to bolster the Fund which looks after drivers injured in racing incidents.

The experimental format at our May meeting, the track grading and Kevin Shinn’s final win seems to have met with approval and promoter Jeremy Heaver wants to give it another go on Saturday.

Behind the scenes Stadium owner Avtar Sandhu has invited a number of prospective sponsors to the June meeting, arranging for them to get some first-hand experience by putting on a Sponsor’s Race earlier in the evening and treating them to a level of hospitality that only Coventry can provide with its luxurious hospitality suites and restaurant.

The meeting is sponsored by mobilecashmate.com. and the Trust Fund meeting Grade Awards by the ever supportive Millers Oils.

BriSCA F2 return for a World of Shale round and at going to press 68 drivers had booked in to race on a track where they are growing in popularity due to the exciting nature of their three-abreast around the bends racing.

All in all it promises to be at least an enteraining meeting, at best a good value for money meeting with an extra heat and no admission price increase.

If you are coming along, please bring a few extra pennies for the BSCDA Trust Fund – an extra 1p from one thousand people makes another £100. Bring your air horns and smiley faces and treat Coventry’s guests and sponsors mobilecashmate.com to a night they will never forget by raising the roof off the stadium with cheers for your favourite driver.

Admission £16 adult / £12 concession / Children 12 and over £5.00 – 11 years and under FREE.
